Dining Diva's "Spotlight On San Diego"
This week's "Spotlight On San Diego" is focused on The Fish Market. Located Downtown, adjacent to the U.S.S. Midway, a long time staple that's sure to please.
With seemingly endless waterfront views across San Diego Bay, Coronado, Harbor Island, etc., without a doubt a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat, day or night.
There we were, my husband Dennis and I, another Friday night and we simply couldn’t decide where to go. As we all know, dining "out" isn't just about the food but equally important is the ambiance. The experience, as it were. And what is our wonderful city of San Diego best known for? You guessed it... mile upon mile of waterfront views.
Therefore it wasn't all that surprising when we looked at each other, seemingly at the same moment, deciding on The Fish Market as our destination of choice. Located near the U.S.S. Midway, with its incredible night time views across San Diego Bay, we already knew we'd made a wise choice.
In the mood for delicious food, a nice libation and a beautiful view, how could we go wrong. Upon arrival we were greeted with a recommendation to venture “upstairs” for Happy Hour. Having visited The Fish Market a number of times prior to this, oddly enough none of those solely for Happy Hour. As they say, timing is everything.
Immediately upon being seated we couldn't help but be mesmerized by the captivating views of the lights sparkling off the water through every window. Talk about setting the mood, mission accomplished. We were seated at the bar where a gentleman introduced himself as Michael, our Bartender.
Asking Michael for a wine recommendation, he suggested a Rose', and with my response being "I'm not much of a Rose' drinker", he replied “It's light and crisp, you won't be disappointed.” and was he ever right. Light, cold and refreshing to say the least. Dennis chose to order the local Coronado Orange Witt, equally as refreshing.
What is a Happy Hour without appetizers. Once again, keeping it on the lighter side, I chose the Cold Tuna which was decorated with petit cucumber slices, micro-greens and a light vinaigrette. Extremely subtle, fresh, and palpable.
Dennis, being somewhat of a connoisseur of Oysters, started with a small order (a bargain at under $2.00 per oyster!). The oysters arrived on a bed of crushed ice, nicely sized and were accompanied by horseradish, cocktail sauce and a festive vinaigrette.
With the addition of an order of Roasted Almonds (salted just right) and a medley of olives, our taste buds were soon firing on all cylinders. Finishing our array of appetizers off with the Cheese Board, the variety was just faultless. The perfect way to end a great evening on the waterfront.
Without a doubt a 10 out of 10 experience. Upstairs at The Fish Market for Happy Hour... you'll be glad you did!
*Oh, on a side note, for those that are into the behind the scenes view (like I am) you're able to get an up close view of what’s going on in the kitchen. You're afforded a fairly good view from the Bar area, but seats are available directly in front of the Chef’s cooking line if you so desire.
